Abstract/Contents:"Professional walk-behind rotary spreaders commonly used on turfgrass have different methods of adjusting the distribution patterns to compensate for product granule differences. Four spreaders using different pattern correction methods and one spreader without a means of pattern correction were tested to determine the optimum pattern quality attained with each. A very light material (ground corn cob) and a large, prilled fertilizer (ammonium nitrate) were tested in the spreaders to evaluate patterns. A spiral cone was the most efficient way to adjust pattern, but partially closing off one port and a pattern slide to adjust drop point on the impeller gave statistically similar results. A means of closing off two ports but with coarse increments was less effective. The spreader with no pattern adjustment did not deliver a satisfactory pattern with either product."
