Abstract/Contents:"A rotary lawn spreader that uses an elliptical shroud to control the pattern has recently been introduced. This production model is apparently based on an earlier design that was fully developed and tested but not produced commerically. The original elliptical shroud design combined many of the best features of drop and rotary spreaders while eliminating the negatives associated with each. Unlike the original design, the new production spreader can be used with the shroud in a "drop mode" or without the shroud in a conventional "rotary mode". The spreader was evaluated to determine whether it met the objective of delivering a constant swath width and a uniform, trapezoidal pattern with the shroud using a range of granule sizes and densities. The spreader pattern with or without the shroud was badly skewed with granular products ranging from ground corn cob to large-particle fertilizer granules. Pattern uniformity at the widths specified by the manufacturer [0.61 m (2 ft) with shroud; 2.44 m (8 ft) without shroud] was very poor. A reduction in swath width to 0.30 m (1 ft) was necessary to obtain an acceptable pattern with the shroud. This production spreader falls far short of the performance previously demonstrated to be possible with a shrouded spreader."
