Abstract/Contents:"Encapsulated controlled-release granular fertilizer can be mechanically damaged when applied with a spreader. If the coating is damaged, the controlled-release function is lost and the granules become readily soluble. This accelerated release could lead to short-term crop damage and long-term lack of fertilizer. Several types of spreaders were evaluated to determine how much damage each spreader did to encapsulated granules. No damage resulted from a Gandy Orbit-Flow applicator with a fluted wheel metering system. Minimal damage resulted from a Gandy Turf Tender with a bar agitator. Damage from a Vicon pendulum spreader, a Lely rotary spreader, and a Scott drop spreader was significant and could affect the overall release rate of the fertilizer product."
