Abstract/Contents: | Describes how the Minnesota Department of Transportation "used about 12,000 cubic yards of compost...to replace a wetland removed during the widening of Minnesota Highway 36." Explains that compost can "prevent erosion and water pollution...[and] using compost to reclaim wetlands is a more ecofriendly alternative to dredging soil from an existing wetland and moving it to the site." Discusses a "living wall" made of compost, intended to protect Sweeney Lake in Minneapolis, Minnesota, which is estimated to "triple retention time, before the water flows out of the pond." Concludes that "establishing uniform quality standards for compost will make a big difference in providing a more biologically stable, consistent product." |
