Abstract/Contents: | Discusses how the "shockingly high gas prices and long lines at the pump prompted by fuel shortages hit the golf industry hard in the [1970s] and could do so again if changes in the way business is conducted aren't made." States that "golf maintenance budgets exploded with major adjustments for fuel, chemicals, fertilizer, PVC pipe and transportation costs." Describes how people adjusted to higher gas prices, including reduced mowing rates, moving closer to their jobs and buying smaller cars. Suggests that "the golf industry needs responsible, progressive planning and a change in tactics." Also states that "wall-to-wall winter overseeding needs to be examined closely, because it extends the growing season into a year-round endeavor, causing maintenance workers to use more electricity and fuel." |
