Abstract/Contents:Defines Zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) as "a warm-season turfgrass species that provides an excellent golfing surface in the transition zone of the US [United States] that can be used for tees, fairways, roughs, and bunker faces." Provides a brief history of the use of zoysiagrass in the United States. States that "seeded zoysiagrass has tremendous potential for golf courses...because it affords the benefits of vegetatively established zoysiagrass, but can be established at a fraction of the cost of sodded zoysiagrass." Describes site preparation for successfully establishing seeded zoysiagrass and mentions that "late spring to early summer is the preffered seeding date for warm-season grasses" such as zoysiagrass. Mentions the seeding rate of common zoysiagrass and discusses post-seeding weed control, fertilization, and traffic tolerance. Also describes the winter hardiness and costs of zoysiagrass. Concludes that "establishing seeded zoysiagrass will reduce irrigation, pesticide and fertilizer inputs and costs when compared to inputs needed to maintain a cool-season sward. Zoysiagrass use can result in transition zone golf courses that are more environmentally friendly and sustainable, and seeded zoysiagrass makes this goal more attainable."
