Abstract/Contents:Discusses golf course mower safety standards. States that several United States mower manufacturers "are involved at various levels toward working to establish an overall safety standard - one that includes specific guidelines for rollover protective structures (ROPS) - that is unique to the commercial turf care maintenance industry." Explains that "general guidelines governing professional mower safety currently fall under the auspices of standard B71.4 of the American National Standards Institute [ANSI]...ANSI B71.4 was designed with operator safety at its core; however, the standard does not include a provision for rollover protective structures." Discusses International Organization for Standardization (ISO) efforts to develop "an all-encompasing safety standard specific to commercial turf care equipment weighing 3,000 kilograms (approximately 6,600 pounds) or less" called "ISO/DIS 21299, Powered ride-on turf care equipment - roll-over protective structures." States that "there are four general mower safety standards worldwide...ANSI B71.4 and B71.1 (which pertains to consumer products), a standard unique to countries in the European Union and another that basically encompasses the rest of the world." States that "according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 11 mower-related deaths on golf courses from 2003 to 2005." Also states that turf equipment manufacturers "see (advancing safety) as the right thing to do." Suggests that "it is important to be proactive about safety, because regardless of what standard is in palce at any point in the future, employers will still be bound by OSHA [Occupational Safety and Health Administration] to provide a safe work environment. That means ensuring a safe work environment will remain the responsibility of the employer...Look for the potential for danger: It's everywhere."
