Abstract/Contents:Discusses profiling potential benefits and draw-backs of sand-based greens. States that "the best part about sand-based greens is the control they provide. This control is predicated upon the precision of...management [programs], [the] ability to mow, water and feed in a way that sustains healthy turf and provides a quality playing surface." Explains that to have "great Poa annua putting surfaces, the greens complex will need some sand, but really requires more water and nutrient-holding ability." Suggests that "an ideal putting surface has the proper mix of grass and sand at the surface. This combination will result in putting greens that provide optimum playability." States that "the sand must meet USGA [United States Golf Association] specifications for physical properties and performance. Ideally, [one] should topdress new sand greens with the sand used for constructing greens without organic amendment."
