Abstract/Contents:Discusses irrigation practices. States that "turf first signals its need for water with persistent footprints and equipment-wheel marks. This is due to a lack of turgidity, which causes the turf to take longer to 'snap back.' This is the time to begin irrigation." Discusses frequency, amount of water, and system design basics of irrigation. Provides suggestions for designing an irrigation system including placing valve boxes off the field, and having a "kill switch" to shut off the sprinklers in an emergency. Also provides suggestions for controlling the system. Concludes that "the timing and frequency of irrigaton represent a compromise between the needs of the turfgrass and the needs of the field's users. There will be some give-and-take on both sides, but the users win more often than not."
