| Abstract/Contents: | "Fourteen of 46 enxymes tested using horizontal starch-gel electrophoresis were in sufficient quantity, easily resolved, and gave consistent results which could be used to identify Xanthomonas campestris pathovars. These included: fructose diphosphatase, galactose dehydrogenase, glucokinase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, glucose phosphate isomerase, isocitrate dehycrogenase, luctate dehydrogenase,malate dehydrogenase, phosphoglucomutase, and phosphogluconate dehydrogenase. Of 11 pathovars (a total of 45 isolates), there was little intra-pathovar variation; X.c. pv. holcicola (4 isolates), X. c. pv. manihotis (7 isolates), X. c. pv. nigromaculans (4 isolates), and X. c. pr. pelargonii (3 isolates) exhibited none. The large number of isozyme differences between pathovars demonstrates their potential for identifying pathovars of this bacterial species." |
