Abstract/Contents:"Brown patch, cuased by the fungus Rhizoctonia solani, is a widespread disease of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) in regions of the United States receiving extended periods of warm humid weather. Turf trials were conducted to select and develop perennial ryegrasses with improved resistance to brown patch under field conditions in NJ. Perennial ryegrass cultivars and selections differed substantially in disease reaction. Most ryegrass cultivars originating from the cool summer climates of northwestern Europe, New Zealand or Canada (i.e.-Pelo, Ruanui and Norlea) were higly susceptible under turf maintenance. Germplasm from the continental climates of Central Europe, however, produced cultivars (Loretta and Elka) with moderate levels of brown patch resistance. Cultivars (i.e. -Palmer, Prelude and Premier) developed from naturalized ecotypes in the Mid-Atlantic region of the U.S. exhibited the most significant improvement in resistance to this disease."
