| Abstract/Contents: | "Poa pratensis L. and P. annua L. exhibiting symptoms of summer patch disease in Rhode Island were surveyed for the presence of brown, extotrophic fungi on the roots and crowns of affected tillers. A fungus with a Phialophora conidial state was consistently isolated and fruited in culture to produce the teleomorphic state. According to Mr. John Walker of the Biological and Chemical Research Institute, Rydalmere, Australia, the fungus is a member of the genus Magnaporthe Krause and Webster, similar to M. rhizophila Scott and Deacon. Two-year-old P. pratensis sod inoculated with the Magnaporthe sp. resulted in roughly circular patches (26 x 18 cm in diam.) of stunted, reddish-brown to tan colored tillers. A tuft of apparently unaffected turf remained in the center of these patches. Results of these studies indicate a causal relationship between this Magnaporthe sp. and summer patch disease." |
