Abstract/Contents:Discusses potential alternatives to tall fescue in eastern Virginia. Provides information on hybrid bluegrass, mixtures of hybrid bluegrass and tall fescue, and rhizomatous tall fescues. States that "hybrid bluegrasses germinate and establish slower than tall fescue" and that "hybrid bluegrass color and quality was slightly less than tall fescue during the first months of growth. As the hybrid matured, though, turf quality increased." Reports that "hybrid bluegrasses possess a strong creeping growth habit due to rhizomes (underground stem), something that most tall fescues do not possess. This should further improve turf density and provide for recuperative potential if a turf stand is damaged." Concludes that "the ideal time to establish any cool-season turf (including hybrid bluegrass and rhizomatous tall fescue) continues to be late summer to early fall."
