Abstract/Contents:"Field experiments were established in 1983 and 1984 in Buckingham Co., VA to evaluate herbicides for the control of tall fescue prior to no-till alfalfa establishment. Four identical experiments were established with spring or fall treatment in both 1983 and 1984. All experiments were arranged in randomized complete block design with four replications and individual plots of 2.1 x 5.5 m. Treatments were applied to established fescue which had been mowed to a height of 5-10 cm. All treatments were applied in 261 L/ha of water at a pressure of 207 kilopascals. Treatments included paraquat in a split sequential treatment as a standard in comparison to glyphosate, SC-0224, HOW-0661, sethoxydim, and fluazifop-butyl. Parameters evaluated included percent fescue control, vigor of uncontrolled fescue, alfalfa stand establishment, and forage yield and quality. Results from the four studies indicated that the standard paraquat sequential was the most effective treatment with respect to fescue control and alfalfa vigor. Glyphosate and SC-0224 were as effective as paraquat in fescue control at rates > to 2.24 kg/ha, but initial alfalfa stand establishment was reduced. No significant effects of the addition of non-ionic surfactant to glyphosate, SC-0224, or HOE-0661 were observed. Sethoxydim was more effective than fluazifop-butyl in fescue control, but gave fair to good control only at rates > .56 kg/ha. HOE-0661 was not effective in fescue control at any rate evaluated."
