Abstract/Contents: | Profiles Michael Bailey, superintendent of Whitlock Golf and Country Club in Hudson Heights, Quebec, Canada. States that "since 1991, he has been struggling with an issue that is becoming more and more prevalent- a community-wide pesticide ban." Discusses how "the new council revised the bylaw, extending the golf course exemption from the ban indefinitely. Whitlock and two other golf courses in town are well aware their exemption from this bylaw is conditional. They have to constantly show good faith to an environmental committee they report to on an annual basis." Explains that "good cultivation techniques...are Bailey's first line of defence against insects, weeds and fungi that sometimes attack." States that "some effects of the bylaw have been positive. It became much easier for Whitlock Golf and Country Club to obtain state-of-the-art equipment if they could demonstrate it would result in a reduction in pesticide use." Concludes that "after showing and explaining to the town's environmental committee what we do and why, we have found they have become an advocate for the efforts made by golf clubs, rather than an adversary... We must continue to educate and be educated so we can honestly answer the concerns of others and be at peace with the knowledge we are trully doing the best we can for golfers, our community and the environment." |
