Abstract/Contents:"The year-round cycle of weed succession in common bermudagrass alwns can be broken with various herbicide treatments. A series of 19 herbicide treatment combinations of DCPA, oxadiaazon, MSMA, metribuzin, MCPP, and 2,4-D were applied on March 22, May 16, May 30, June 13, and June 30 to four lawns having slight, moderate severe, and very severe weed pressure. The "West lawn" area had a two year history of an excellent complete weed control and fertilizer program. No crabgrass or goosegrass grew in the check plots and ony 4% broadleaf cover was present in mid June and bermudagrass cover averaged 93%. All treatments 'provided' excellent weed control, but actually this lawn did not need weed control in 1984. The 'East lawn' had the same history as the above area, but 0.5 kg/ha each of crabgrass and goosegrass was overseeded in March with vertical grooving. Less than 5% broadleaf weed cover developed and all phenoxy and to a lesser degree preemergence treatments were effective. All preemergence treatments provided excellent crabgrass control, but DCPA allowed up to 6.5% goosegrass by August 1. Waiting until May 16 to apply MSMA plus DCPA gave very good crabgrass and better goosegrass control. By June 13 about 50% crabgrass was controlled (and goosegrass prevented) very well by two applications of MSMA plus DCPA (with or without metribuzin) and MCPP = 2,4-D in the tank mix controlled broadleaf weeds. The 'South lawn' had the same history and overseeding as the above area and was sprayed three times with glyphosate in the late summer and fall ofn 1983 for bermudagrass control. Phenoxy herbicides gave outstanding control of broadleaf weeds and MSMA applied May 16 seemed to control many seedlings. DCPA and oxadiazon gave outstanding crabgrass control and adding MSMA with supplemental preemergence DCPA improved control slightly, but DCPA allowed about 40% goosegrass by August 1. Single MSMA applications in mid May were ineffective; double applications improved crabgrass control, but allowed 60% goosegrass by August 1. Single MSMA applications on June 13 tank mixed with DCPA and MCPP + 2,4-D reduced crabgrass cover from about 50% in mid June to 15% by August 1. Only 0.5% crabgrass and 4% goosegrass cover (best results on August 1) was present where MSMA + metribuzin + DCPA + MCPP + 2,4-D was applied June 13 and 30, but 61% crabgrass and 17% goosegrass had been present on June 13. The 'UAF-Block 2' area had a history of planned neglect. The area had only about 20% bermudagrass and 50% or more broadleaf weeds. Crabgrass and goosegrass were overseeded as above and about 4 mm of irrigation was applied 5 days per week from June 1 to July 15. The heavy irrigation broke down DCPA crabgrass control after mid June. Oxadiazon performed well, but still allowed 13% crabgrass and 3% goosegrass by August 1. DCPA applications made in May tended to reduce prostrate spurge. Single MSMA applications did not reduce crabgrass cover in this test. DCPA + MSMA + MCPP + 2,4-D (and with metribuzin) twice in June provided good overall summer weed control. The March DCPA (12 kg ai/ha) plus mid May DCPA (8,4)+ MSMA (2.2) + MCPP (1.1) +2,4-D (1.1) program gave the best (outstanding) season long control of all weeds."
