Abstract/Contents:"One of the most severe problem weeds in Georgia's blueberry orchards is common bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers]. Due to its' growth habits a control system was devised by the use of postemergence grass herbicides applied in early fall followed by oryzalin application in fall prior to total dormancy of bermudagrass and in winter during dormancy. The systems approached were: 1) In early September 1983 bermudagrass was mowed to ground level and left two weeks to obtain a new growth of 4 to 6 inches, 2) after the 4 to 6 inches new growth was obtained, postemergence grass herbicides with crop oil were applied in late September 1983 and left undisturbed for two weeks, 3) after two weeks in early October 1983, Oryzalin at 3.0 lbs ai/A was applied and left to overwinter; 4) in mid-february 1984 oryzalin at 3.0 lbs ai/A was again applied. The postemergence grass herbicides tested were: Sethoxydim at 0.5 lb ai/A; Fluazifop-butyl at 0.5 lb ai/A and Haloxyfop at 0.5 lb ai/A. These were applied individually and in combination with Oryzalin applied sequentially. Control ratings of common bermudagrass were taken at 4, 20, 36 nd 48 weeks intervals. After 4 weeks plots treated with Sethoxydim or Sethoxydim plus one application of Oryzalin had less than 70% control of common bermudagrass. Fluazifop-butyl or Fluazifop plus one application of Oryzalin gave 80% control. Haloxyfop or Haloxyfop plus one appplication of Oryzalin gave 100% control. Plots treated with Surflan alone had a 0% control of common bermudagrass. After 20 weeks all plots were 100% foliar dead due to winter dormancy. After 36 weeks Sethoxydim and Fluazifop-butyl gave less than 70% control of common bermudagrass; Haloxyfop gave 70%; Sethoxydim plus Oryzalin in fall gave 60% control; Fluazifop-butyl plus Oryzalin in fall gave 70% control; Haloxyfop plus Oryzalin in fall gave 80% control; Oryzalin in fall plus winter gave 20% control; Sethoxydim plus Oryzalin in fall and winter gave 70% control; Fluazifop-butyl or Haloxyfop plus oryzalin in fall and winter gave 100% control. After 48 weeks Fluazifop or Haloxyfop plus Oryzalin in fall and winter gave 100% control of common bermudagrass; Sethoxydim plus Oryzalin in fall and winter gave 70% control; Oryzalin applied in fall and winter gave 20% control. Sethoxydim, fluazifop-butyl or Haloxyfop plus Oryzalin in fall alone gave 60-70% control. Sethoxydim, Fluazifop-butyl or Haloxyfop gave 10-20% control or had almost a total regrowth of common bermudagrass."
