| Abstract/Contents: | Explains how "most utilities don't have enough money to replace deteriorating systems, [so] it is essential that they develop cost-effective programs for rehabilitating water mains.' States that "management of unacounted for water and rehabilitation of water mains are important in water conservation." Explains that "there are three main sources of unaccounted for water: the distribution system (pumps, water mains, and hydrants), the meter system (master, commercial, and domestic), and the billing system (meter reading and computer billing). States that "leaks occur when a joint fails, while breaks occur when a main fractures." Concludes that "by analyzing the main break history of similar types of water mains, it is possible to develop age-break functions. Using these functions, it is possible to predict the future rate of main breaks in a particular section." |
