Abstract/Contents:Discusse shoreline development along lakes and the potential damage it can cause. Explains that "the shoreline is a transition zone where aquatic species such as frogs, turtles, and fish merge with land species such as minks, racoons, and blue herons...As the environment transitions from water to land, it created conditions for different plants to grow offering a variety of habitats for many animals. The suburban lawn, however, is one of the least biologically diverse environments." States that "in addition to accelerating the movement of pollutants off the land, the suburban lawn adds other sources of pollutants such as lawn fertilizers and pesticides." Offers advice to prtoect the native shoreline, recommending to "keep the lawn away from the lake"; "maintain brush cover on steep sloping lands"; "allow a buffer zone of native vegetation along the lakeshore"; and "avoid retaining walls." Details native shoreline restoration with the construction of a native buffer zone. Concludes that "creative use of lawn and native plants in artistically designed assemblages can prevent erosion, restore wild native habitat and associated wildlife and protect the lake from surface runoff."
