Abstract/Contents:Discusses pitch drainage problems, explaining that "compaction is one of the major problems faced by groundsmen and it either results in surface water run-off, due to the soil's inability to absorb moisture, or water-logging due to hard-pan conditions that prevent gravitational water flow." States that "in many cases the underlying problem may be so great that the only answer is to carry out deep, sub-soil cultivation or trenching and installation of a new drainage system." Suggests that "hollow coring is a tried and trusted method that is very effective over a period of time in that it opens the soil to encourage air and water movement." Explains that complimentary methods of improving drainage are "the incorporation of soil amendments and/or the application to the soil of polymeric polyelectrolytes" and that "both options can be incorporated into the soil surface at the time of construction, following hollow coring, or physically drilled into the soil using a technique called drill and fill." States that "the use of water-soluble polymeric polyelectrolytes...has been very successful in repairing collapsed pore space and restoring aeration and water percolation." Concludes that "neither soil amendments or polymeric polyelectrolytes are seen as replacements for mechanical aeration, but they should be considered as complementary treatments that can be integrated into the annual maintenance programme [program]."
