Abstract/Contents: | Discusses sports turf drainage, explaining that "land which is excessively wet will impose limits on the availability and quality of play and will prevent optimum sward growth and development and restrict maintenance operations." Lists problems that may occur as a result of inadequate drainage, including "reduction in soil temperature leading to later and reduced sward growth", "reduction in the rate of decomposition of organic matter", and "disease/weed problems associated with wet soils." Suggests that "the introduction of drainage by perforated plastic pipe will play an essential role in the part of removal of excess soil water quickly." Mentions that "a number of secondary drainage operations, including by-pass systems, are available - for example sand slitting, gravel banding/grooving, vertidraining and moling." Suggests that "the major requirement for sportsturf over more traditional land drainage, is for the removal of surface water quickly." Discusses drainage installation, recommending that "only specialist contractors and consultants should be approached for both design and installation phases of a project." Suggests that "if an extensive system is to be completed in one attempt, then the earlier access is made the better - though the best time of year for reinstatement is late summer/early autumn." |
