Abstract/Contents:Explains that "water repellent soils are found worldwide and are common in soils supporting turf or pasture grasses." Describes where localized dry spots (LDS) can be found. Discusses the benefits for using soil wetting agents for the "management of water repellency (hydrophobicity) in thatch and soils and for the enhancement of soil hydration in managed turfgrass." Suggests the use of surfactants, or surface active agents, in order to "lower the surface tension of a liquid, allowing easier spreading." Contrasts soaps and wetting agents and defines a wetting agent as "a substance that is adsorbed, which prevents the surface from being repellent to a wetting liquid." Explains that soil wetting agent "application rates are based on multi-year field evaluations conducted on fine turf growing in water repellent soils across a range of environmental conditions." Explains that "increasing the application rate of soil wetting agents beyond the label recommendation will not necessarily increase the degree or duration of effectiveness." Details the effect of thatch on wetting agents. Explains the relationship between aerification, phytotoxicity, pesticides, and wetting agents.
