| Abstract/Contents: | Explains that "the ability to motivate and manage people in an increasingly complex and changing workplace is a major challenge facing supervisors and managers." Explains that good managers should aim to "provide clear direction"; "offer guidance when needed"; "motivate by maintaining a positive environment"; "deal with performance issues as they arise"; "provide regular feedback"; "promote a team atmosphere"; and "provide a game plan or strategy for accomplishing goals." Encourages managers to follow four basic principles: "set clear, specific standards and expectations"; "create appropriate and adequate tools, resources and systems to achieve expectations"; "determine the skills and knowledge required to do the job"; and "provide formal and informal feedback." Concludes that "there are many steps managers can take which can have a positive impact on motivation and productivity. The only way to find out which method is most effective is to give them a try, then watch for results." |
