| Abstract/Contents: | Details nitrogen nutrition of turfgrasses according to Dr. R. E. Schmidt of Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Emphasizes that "in formulating a nitrogen nutrition program for turfgrasses, all environmental phenomena must be considered." States that "ecological factors, both natural and imposed, influence chemical reactions within a plant." Discusses nitrogen and carbohydrate metabolism and factors that affect them, such as "moisture, pH, light, temperature, and nitrogen concentration." States that "in formulating a nitrogen nutritional program one must consider seasonal root and top growth development, carbohydrate accumulation, and extreme temperature stresses." Contrasts root growth of cool-season grasses and foliage growth. Concludes that "it appears that for best year-round turfgrass vigor, nitrogen fertilization should be programmed to conserve carbohydrates and enhance root development." |
