Abstract/Contents:States that the physical, mechanical, and chemical properties of soil have been investigated to determine the causes of "solidification and poor water permeability of root zones in sports field construction. Seven commercial quarz [quartz] sands and other root zone mixes have been analyzed. Two of them were known to cause problems in the above mentioned manner. Within a test series over seven weeks these problems could be associated with the two samples and furthermore [attributed] to certain sand properties. The surface purity of the sand grains [represents] a constant, that can give information about the future behavior of the root zone in the long run. A hypothesis is given" to explain the results. Notes that a second project confirmed this hypothesis and is the subject of part 2 of this series.
