Abstract/Contents:"The postemergence effectiveness of tridiphane applied alone or in combination with atrazine in field corn was compared with other herbicide treatments in field experiments conducted at the University of Massachusetts Exp. Station. Major weed species were large crabgrass [Digitaria sanquinalis (L.) Scop.], fall panicum (Panicum dichotomiflorum Michx.), yellow foxtain [Setaria lutescens (Weigel) Hubb.], redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.). Corn 'Agway 584s' was planted on a Hadley fine sandy loam soil on May 15, 1985 and May 5, 1986 at a density of 63,790/ha and row spacing of 75 cm. Plots were 3 m by 6 m. On May 16, 1985 and May 6, 1986 preemergence herbicide treatments were applied with a CO2 backpack sprayer in 136 L/ha at 152 kPa. Postemergence treatments were applied on June 19, 1985 when the grasses were at the 4- to 6-leaf stage, followed by 7-day split applications on June 25, 1985. In 1986, postemergence treatments were made on May 28 and June 10, when the grasses were at the 1- to 3-leaf and 4- to 6-leaf stages, respectively. Split applications following late postemergence treatments were applied on June 18, 1986. Visual injury ratings (July 12, 1985 and June 17, 1986) indicated little or no injury for all herbicide treatments. Weed control ratings (July 12, 1985) indicated excellent (above 95%) control of all weed species present for all herbicide treatments. By September 12, 1985, all herbicide treatments maintained excellent control of all weed species, with a split application of tridiphane showing little advantage over a single application. In 1986, weed control ratings (June 17) indicated excellent control of all weed species with all herbicide treatments. Tridiphane treatments showed excellent grass control on August 19, with the split applicaiton of tridiphane giving greater season-long control than the split application of atrazine alone in 1986. Silage yields from all herbicide treatments in both 1985 and 1986 were significantly greater than that of the untreated check. The highest silage yields were obtained with tridiphane and atrazine (0.84 and 2.24 kg/ha) at the 4- to 6-leaf stage plus a 7-day split application of atrazine (1.12 kg/ha) and with the hoed check in 1985. In 1986, highest silage yields were obtained with the treatment combination of atraizine and cyanazine at 1.68 and 2.24 kg/ha appplied at the 1- to 3-leaf stage, and with the hoed check."
