Abstract/Contents: | "Past studies have linked reduced triazine phytotoxicity to low pH soils. The objectives of this study were to determine how the addition of various rates of lime would influence weed control in no-tillage corn by atrazine, cyanazine, and simazine applied alone or in combination with alachlor, metolachlor and pendimethalin. This study was run on the same site during the 1985 and 1986 growing seasons. Lime was applied only on April 26, 1985, at the rates of 0, 3375, 6750, and 10,125 kg/ha. Initial soil pH was 5.0 throughout the test area. All lime applications significantly increased soil pH in the upper 5 cm of soil. Addition of lime to the triazine treatments enhanced control of annual grasses, but did not affect control of redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus). Addition of alachlor, metolachlor, and pendimethalin to the triazines increased weed control. Corn yields were not affected by lime applications, but were inversely related to total weed yield. Response of the corn and weeds to increased soil pH will be discussed." |
