Abstract/Contents:"Imbibed barnyardgrass seeds held in darkness at 30 to 40 C for about 8 days require a brief exposure to light to relieve dormancy when subsequently germinated at a 20/30 C alternating temperature. Holding imbibed seeds at > 42 C for approximately 4 days, however, allows about half the seeds to germinate in darkness and only about 10 percent more respond to a light stimulus. The high temperature treatment need not be continuous, since most of the effect can be induced by periods of approximately 2 hours at 46 C. It is proposed that the high temperatures cause a transition from a light-requiring to a non-light requiring form of dormancy. The finding has considerable relevance to field behavior where temperatures near the soil surface often reach 45 to 50 C and thereby could initiate germination of buried barnyardgrass seeds in the absence of a light stimulus. Without the high temperature, the seeds would require a light stimulus for germination."
