Abstract/Contents:"Waldina hard fescue (Festuca ovina var. duriuscula L. Koch 'Waldina') ans white clover (Trifolium repens L.) were seeded in replicated plots in fall, 1984. The white clover did not survive the winter. These plots were then maintained as a natural vegetation treatments. In spring, 1985, vegetation free strips 76 cm (30 in) wide were created in half the plots of each cover with glyphosate, creating the following four treatments: hard fescue covering the entire plot, hard fescue with a vegetation free strip to plant into, naturally occurring vegetation covering the entire plot, and natrually occurring vegetation with a vegetation free strip. Perennial weeds had been eliminated from all the plots with glyphosate prior to seeeding, so the predominanty weeds in the natural vegetation plots were summer annuals. Rooted cuttings of forsythia (Forsythia x intermedia Zab.) and Doublefile viburnum (Viburnum plicatum thunb. var. tomentosum); seedlings of Colorado spruce (Picea pungens Engelm.) and Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris L.); transplants of Douglas fir [Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco] and Fraser fir [Abies fraseri (Pursh) Poir.]; and 1-gal. containers of Andorra junipers [Juniperus horixontalis (Moench) var. plumosa] were planted in the test plots. The vegetation free strips were maintained with directed sprays of oxyfluorfen. All plots were mowed in June and September each year. Plant mortality was determined and the quality of all plants was rated in June and September, 1986. The highest quality plants were found in the natural vegetation plots with the strips. Conifers in the natural vegetation without a strip and in the fescue with a strop were slightlylower quality, but commercially acceptable. Fraser fir in the natural vegetation plots were slightly superior to those int he fescue strip plots. One reason for the reduced ratings of some plants in the fescue strip pplots was some hard fescue got established close to the plants in the strips. Forsythia and viburnum in the fescue strip plots were of acceptable quality, while those growing in the natural vegetation without a strip were too stunted to be considered acceptable. They apparently do not tolerate the shade provided by the weeds as well as the conifers. Except for the junipers, which were marginally acceptable, none of the plants in the hard fescue without a strip were commercially acceptable. All plants in these plots were stunted, many were chlorotic, and the growth of Fraser fir was curled, possibly from an alleleopathic effect. Hard fescue sod was much more competitive and injurious to the plants in this stucy than the natural vegetation. The cover treatments had little or no effect on plant survival, except many viburnums were lost to rabbits in the natural vegetation plots without strips."
