Abstract/Contents:"Trials were established in 1984, 1985 and 1986 to evaluate herbicides for preemergence control of smooth crabgrass [Digitaria ischaemum (Schreb.) Muhl.] in Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.), red fescue (Festuca rubra L.) and a mixed stand of red fescue and Kentucky bluegrass at the University of Rhode Island Turf Research Farm, Kingston, RI. In each trial selected treatments were applied in March as well as April. Herbicides, formulations, rates, dates of treatment, number of applications, and grass species involved are shown in Table 1. Plots were 16 to 20 sq ft in size with three replications. In the 1984 and 1985 trials sprays were applied at 150 gpa and treatments were made March 14-16 or April 12-22. In the 1986 trials sprays were applied at 75 gpa and treatments were put out March 5 or April 25. Granular magerials were applied by hand. Test areas received appreciable rainfall or were irrigated within three days of treatment. Plots were irrigated as needed to prevent dought stress. Smooth crabgrass germination started in early May and continued through July with peak germination occurring in June. Crabgrass cover in untreated plots and dates of cover estimation are shown in Table 1. Crabgrass control varied somewhat between trials, however the following treatments provided excellent control (90-100%) without turf injury with a single application in March in all trials where tested: pendimethalin 60DG at 3 lbs, pendimethalin 4EC at 2 lbs, prodiamine at 0.5 lbs, and prodiamine 65WDG at 0.375 lbs. DCPA at 10.5 lbs gave excellent control in all but the 1985 red fescue trial. Oxadiazon gave excellent control at 3 lbs in 1984 and 1986, and good control (80-89%) in 1985. Control was less effective, although variable, from March applications of benefin, benefin + trifluralin, bensulide and siduron. Results from benefin alone or with trifluralin were somewhat similar. Benefin + trifluralin at the 3 lb rate and DCPA at the 10.5 lb rate resulted in objectionable injury to red fescue turf in the 1986 trial. Prodiamine 50WP at 2 lbs (2X rate =) resulted in objecctionable injury to the fescue/bluegrass stand. Prostrate spurge (Euphorbia supina Raf.) occurring in the Kentucky bluegrass areas was effectively controlled by single March applications of the following materials in the 1986 trial: DCPA at 10.5 lb, pendimethalin 60DG at 1.5 lb and prodiamine 65WDG at 0.75 lb."
