Abstract/Contents:"Three field experiments were conducted at the University of Massachusetts Turfgrass research Center, South Deerfield. The objectives of these experiments were i) to evaluate the efficacy of various herbicides applied preemergence or postemergence for crabgrass [Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop.] control, ii) to determine the optimum stage of crabgrass growth for postemergence applications, and iii) to evaluate the effects of carrier volume on postemergence activity of two herbicides. Experiments were conducted at a height of 3.8 cm under low fertility. Treatments were appplied to 1 by 3 m plots with a CO2 backpack sprayer at a pressure of 152 kPa in 675 L/ha. The preemergence treatments were applied on April 25, 1986. The postemergence treatments were applied on June 19 and June 27, 1986 when the crabgrasses were at the 2- to 3-leaf and 3- to 5-leaf stage, respectively. The preemergence application of trifluralin and benefin (premix) combination 2G at 2.2 kg/ha provided excellent crabgrass control (>90%) over the entire season with little or no injury to turfgrass. Both formulations (60 WDG and 2.5G) of benefin at 2.2 to 3.3 kg/ha gave excellent crabgrass control. Pendimethalin 60WDG at 1.7 to 3.4 kg/ha and prodiamine 60WDG at 0.56 to 2.2 kg/ha controlled crabgrass effectively over the entire season. DCPA 75WP at 11.8 kg/ha and oxadiazon 50WP at 2.2 to 3.3 kg/ha controlled crabgrass effectively. However, oxadiazon treatments resulted in temporary turf injury (25 to 38%). In contrast, bensulide 4E at 11.8 kg/ha provided only 87% crabgrass control (July 10, 1986). In general, late postemergence application (6- to 7-leaf stage and tillering, July 11, 1986) of XRM-4763 resulted in better crabgrass control than early postemergence application (3- to 4-leaf stage, June 19, 1986) of the same rate. Crabgrass control increased as the rate of XRM-4763 increased from 1.1 to 2.2 kg/ha. in addition, carrier volume (water) had a positive impact on crabgrass control with increased volume of carrier from 652 to 1688 L/ha. Fenoxaprop at 0.20 and 0.39 kg/ha applied postemergence provided excellent crabgrass control. There were no significant differences between EC and EW formulations of fenoxaprop especially when applied with 338 or 675 L/ha or water carrier. EC formulation of fenoxaprop at both rates (0.20 and 0.39 kg/ha) failed to provide acceptable crabgrass control at 1350 L/ha volume of carrier. However, EW formulation of fenoxaprop exhibited excellent crabgrass cotnrol only at the highest rate (0.39 kg/ha) with 1350 L/ha volume of carrier."
