Abstract/Contents:"Postemergence control of smooth crabgrass [Digitaria ischaemum (Schreb.) Muhl.] was evaluated in seven trials at the University of Rhode Island Turf Research Farm, Kingston, RI, during 1985 and 1986. The test areas were lawns of red fescue (Festuca rubra L.), Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Herbicides, rates, treatment dates and growth stage of crabgrass at time of treatment are shown in Table 1. Sprays were applied at 175 gpa water in 1985 trials with the exeption of fenoxprop 1EC and SC-0051 which were applied at 50 gpa. In 1986 trials, sprays were applied at 75 gpa. Granular materials were applied to moist turf by hand. Plot size was between 16 and 36 sq ft with 3 or 4 replications. No rainfall occurred within 20 hours after treatments. Test areas were irrigated when necessary to avoid moisture stress. Crabgrass germination started in early May and continued into early July in 1985. During 1986, germination also began in early May, however few new plants amerged after mid-June. In the June 4 trial, with crabgrass in the 1-4 leaf stage, only tridiphane gave good control (80-89%). Substantial crabgrass germination occurred following treatments, indicating good preemergence activity of tridiphane. At the 2 lb rate control was excellent (90-100%), however, turf injury was considered to be objectionable. Similar results were observed for tridiphane in the June 10, 1986 trial. Fenoxaprop and MSMA were ineffective in this trial because of subsequent germination. In July trials most crabgrass was in the tillering stage and there was little further germination. Fenoxaprop 1EC was consistent in providing good to excellent control with a single application at the 0.12 and 0.18 lb rates. The 0.5 EW formulation of fenoxaprop also gave excellent control at the 0.12 lb rate. Control was not diminished by either of two safeners included in some fenoxaprop treatments and there appeared to be a slight reduction in turf discoloration. Fluroxypyr at 0.5 lb provided good control in the June 10 trial but performed poorly in July trials. When combined with tridiphane however, control was good to excellent and better than comparable rates of tridiphane alone. In July trials control with tridiphane was inconsistent. Granular formulations of tridiphane without fertilizer provided results similar to sprays. Crabgrass control with granular formulations containing fertilizer was poor compared to similar treatments without fertilizer. MSMA provided excellent control with two applications although injury to red fescue was considered objectionable at the 2.0 lb rate. The experimental compound AC-263499 gave little control and injury was objectionable. Crabgrass control with SC-0051 was also poor except in the July 14 trial where the 0.25 lb rate gave excellent control."
