Abstract/Contents:Discusses an extended water shortage in California from 1987-1992, stating that it "brought forth the need to develop a better way to use water for landscape irrigation." Details University of California's agricultural studies that "formulated water needs for crops as a model" and development of the "Landscape Coefficient Method for Estimating Water Requirements of Landscape Plantings." Describes what methods were employed and what steps were applied to compute landscape water allocations. Explains that "when the water allocation was determined, the landscaper received a copy, and was directed to remain within this budget." States that "landscapers in need of assistance in preparing their landscape survey forms were invited to bring in their survey forms and were given direct support and information about how to take advantage of the program...[and] landscapers were encouraged to take landscape auditing classes developed by the California Polytechnical Institute in San Luis Obispo." Concludes that "the efficient water use encouraged by this method resulted in significant short-and long-term water savings."
