| Abstract/Contents: | Profiles the creators of the International Golf Course Equipment Managers Association (IGCEMA), stating that they are "determined to raise the image and status of their trade [by] making a push to create an association and certification program that they hope will be recognized throughout the world." States that they're "trying to create a value for the equipment technician...the same things that the [Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA)] provides for superintendents." Explains that "the IGCEMA is working with the Equipment & Engine Training Council...to establish guidelines for a certification test, and has set up a five-person committee that is aiming to develop an internationally recognized certification program." Suggests that "for too long...the equipment tech has been viewed as the grease monkey in the back of the shop with a pack of Lucky's rolled up in his shirt sleeve...and is one reason an acute shortage of qualified equipment technicians exists nationwide." States that "[the IGCEMA] can't do anything without the superintendent's approval. They have a huge association in this golf industry, and it would make no sense for [the IGCEMA] to go around that." Concludes that "a national association for technicians...would help provide more qualified job candidates for superintendents." |
