Abstract/Contents:Describes Milorganite, stating that it is produced by the city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and is "the byproduct of recycled sewage." States that "increased production costs and a changing Milwaukee industrial landscape combined with rabid competition and decreasing nitrogen content have producers and consumers questioning the future of the once-dominant fertilizer." Explains that "Milorganite's popularity began to wane following the development of synthetic, nitrogen-enriched fertilizers that added the component of time-released formulas. The...products worked as well or better and were cheaper." Suggests that the question is whether "the product still [performs], and [if it is] living up to the label guarantee." Concludes that "district commissioners...are toying with the idea of licensing the Milorganite name to other cities that produce similar sludge fertilizers."

Note:Correction note appears in Golfweeks's SuperNEWS, 8(21), 2006: "Milorganite is the byproduct of treated sewage. Its formulation is a combination of nitrogen (6.2 percent), phosphorous (2.6 percent) and iron (4 percent). A decrease in the amount of nitrogen found in Milorganite is attributed in part to the closings of several Milwaukee breweries, yeast plants and tanneries. Heavy metals and other pollutants are removed from Milorganite through a pre-treatment process."
