Abstract/Contents: | Describes a potential variation in late-season nitrogen programs, stating that "the use of nitrogen at the end of the season to aid with winter hardiness and spring performance is too much too late...The use of nitrogen fertilizer after growth has ceased has been shown to enchance growth and performance the following spring, but it also has been shown to compromise water quality when the nitrogen leaches into the ground water." Explains that "research conducted in the 1960s and '70s concluded that maximum spring color and growth were achieved when nitrogen was applied after leaves stopped growing...Researchers learned that spring color, root growth and shoot density were the same for applications made from mid-September through mid-December." Suggests that "there is an agronomic benefit to avoiding late-season, high-rate applications, and an environmental benefit of reducing leaching through low rate applications and ceasing applications when growth stops." |
