Abstract/Contents:Discusses the method of "smart scalping," which "requires mowing the turf to about half its normal height of cut and gradually reducing watering before verticutting or flailing. The ideal time to implement smart scalping...is when overnight temperatures are between 65 and 75 degrees, when the Bermuda turf naturally begins to turn dormant." States that "by slightly dampening the turf before its final cut, and with the Bermuda height already reduced, the amount of airborne debris is reduced dramatically." Explains that "in the dry scalping method, superintendents do not water the Bermudagrass for an extended period. The bone dry, dormant turf is then scraped nearly to the dirt, watered and overseeded with perennial ryegrass seed. But the dry scraping process creates huge plumes of dust and turf debris polluting the air." Suggests that "each year [smart scalping has] gained momentum."
