Abstract/Contents:"Goals of watershed management include: (a) retention and/or absorption of runoff into groundwater by government, (b) efficiency of water use and reuse by the consumer, and (c) efficiency of water treatment and reclamation by utilities. This paper will review practical techniques currently available to residential, business, organizational and government water customers to promote efficient end-use and to reduce waste. More efficient irrigation systems, pricing, properly functioning fixtures, water-flow devices and metering do much to decrease consumption. Specialized adaptations for landscape water use include the capture and use (harvest) of rainwater, drip irrigation and efficient sprinkler heads, proper land grade management (contouring) and drought-tolerant vegetation. Graywater systems and wetland ecosystems hold incredible promise for water treatment and reuse but are complex in definition and implementation. Benefits of proper use-oriented water management are less water treatment or dumping, cost savings to society and healthy longevity of critical aquifers and our fragile coastal and wetland ecosystems."
