Abstract/Contents:Suggests winter greens tarping as a preventive maintenance procedure. Suggests that "putting the course to bed...is one of the most important, yet often overlooked, aspects of [the superintendent] profession." States that "leaf damage is cosmetic, crown damage can be lethal. It is vital to preserve the growth point in its dormant state." Lists "four items...[that are] the most damaging to the plant during a [an] overwintering state": desiccation, cold temperature kill, crown hydration, and ice damage. Reports that "tarping has proven to be the most viable and successful method to ensure a successful over-wintering and protect from the four main injury mechanisms." Discusses potential disadvantages of tarping, including cost and straw removal in the spring.
