Abstract/Contents: | Discusses regrading as a potential solution to field drainage problems. States that "if good drainage doesn't exist on a sports field, it doesn't matter what else is done to it, athletes will be playing in a 'soup bowl.'" Explains that "surface water...occurs when water runs down a slope and settles into a low area with no other place to go because it cannot penetrate the surface fast enough...In such a situation...the best solution is to...regrade." Suggests that "ideally, the crown of a typical sports field should be 1½ per cent...On 'goal-less' fields, such as those used exclusively for [American] football, the surface can be 'turtle-humped' whereby the crown runs between the 20-yard lines and water can run out through the end zones." Concludes that "sub-surface drainage problems are associated with high water tables. Grey-colored soil is usually the clue." |
