Abstract/Contents:Reports that "during the normal growth process plants leaves, shoots and roots are continually being replaced. The dead plant material is deposited at the surface of the green as thatch which can be in various states of decomposition. As this thatch decomposes, it breaks down into very fine particles which can clog air filled pore spaces in [the soil]." Explains that "if [one combines] these fine particles and water there is not much room left for oxygen, the nutrient that is required in greatest quantities in [the] soil." Describes possible effects of plants without adequate oxygen, stating that "root development is restricted, aerobic respiration is blocked and energy declines, which in turn inhibits the transfer of nutrients to other parts of the plant." States that "there are essentially two factors that affect oxygen availability to the plant: oxygen diffusion rate and oxygen concentration." Suggests that "regular vertical mowing and topdressing is part of an integrated program with physical removal of organic matter through aerification the cornerstone."
