Abstract/Contents:Discusses public demand for green space, mentioning the phrase, "not in my backyard" or NIMBY. states that it is "understood by one and all as the description of those vociferous neighborhood groups that strenuously object to the development of parks next to or close to residential homes." Cites four factors as the cause: rapid urbanization, poor planning and design, unacceptable management, and trust. Offers suggestions for developers who may wish to fix these problems. Suggests that developers "go slow to go fast"; "be transparent"; "be flexible"; and "tell the truth." Concludes that "the bad news is NIMBY is here to stay. But the good news is [developers] can cope with this behavior by utilizing some or all of the strategies listed."
