Abstract/Contents:"Research concerning plant growth regulators on warm season turfgrasses such as common Bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.] has been limited and deserves greater attention. In particular, research has been inadequate in the area of interactions between growth regulators, nitrogen fertility, and soil type on Bermudagrass growth and water consumption. In this study, Bermudagrass was grown under four levels of nitrogen fertility and on three different soils. Three growth regulators were applied at two different rates: mefluidide at 0.25 and 0.50 kg ha-1, flurprimidol at 1.5 and 3.0 kg ha-1, and amidochlor at 1.7 and 3.4 kg ha-1. Growth response was compared to a control. Biomass, cumulative height, root length density, turf color, canopy temperatures and evapotranspiration were studied over a nine week period. Flurprimidol was found to reduce cumulative height by as much as 83 percent and water consumption by as much as 27 percent. Mefluidide and amidochlor did not provide significant long term growth suppression at any rate or any nitrogen level on the three soils. Phytotoxicity was observed in the form of leaf tip dieback and discoloration. Overall growth and color of the turfgrass was better on the loam and clay soils as compared to the sandy loam soil when growth regulators were applied. Discoloration was found to be offset by increased nitrogen levels which also reduced the efficiacy of flurprimidol. On the sandy loam soil, color was only acceptable at the 1.5 kg ha-1 flurprimidol and 73.3 kg ha-1 rate."
