Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the "most environmental issue facing the golf industry...how to reduce fossil fuel usage and the emission of toxic fumes into the ozone." Suggests that "a worthy goal...would be for those who work in the golf turf maintenance industry to reduce fossil fuel use by at least 50 percent during the next five years." Provides background information on how fossil fuels are used, stating that "nitrogen for fertilizer is captured from the air by burning fuel...pesticides are carbon-based molecules transported in plastic packaging...and [water is pumped and delivered] through synthetic pipe." Also provides ways the golf industry may be able to resude fossil fuel use, including reducing mowing and watering. States that "there are clear socio-political implications of being less reliant on fossil fuels. The United States imports almost 70 percent of its fossil fuel from foreign sourses, and many of those countries are very unstable politically." Concludes that "an environmentally green golf course can produce significant economic benefits over a traditional golf courses that have beautiful green turf." |
