Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the impact of golf course maintenance on the environment, stating that "a golf course operation needs a structured framework to ensure optimal environmental performance and hazard prevention. This is best accomplished by the implementation of an environmental management system (EMS)." Defines an EMS as "a framework of organizing and planning the activities required to achieve a golf course's environmental goals and objectives." Mentions an environment program launched in January 1999 by the Manitoba Golf Superintendents Association (MGSA) "as part of an ongoing effort to improve their environmental performance." Describes MGSA's EMS, stating that "their EMS called for the establishment of a steering committee comprised of community stakeholders, both internal and external to the golf sector, along with the development of a self-assessment checklist and the hiring of a part-time environmental resource co-ordinator to aid in the program rollout." Details the process of establishing an EMS, listing the steps, including developing an authority structure, establishing an environmental baseline, writing an environmental policy, developing and implementing an environmental plan, and an internal audit and annual review. Concludes that "by incorporating an environmental health and safety management system into day-to-day operations, there will be a variety of benefits for managers, staff, contractors, patrons and the larger community." |
