Abstract/Contents:Discusses the effect of nitrogen fertilization on golf courses. States that "on most golf courses, nitrogen is applied to turf more than any other mineral element, and it comprises the largest component of the fertilizer budget...because of its importance as a component in many of the biochemical constituents of plants, including chlorophyll, amino acids, proteins, enzymes, [and] vitamins." Emphasizes the importance of "having the right amount of nitrogen [because it] is absolutely crucial for healthy turf - as is knowing when to apply it." Describes symptoms for lack of nitrogen. Discusses nitrogen application rates, growth patterns of cool-seaon grasses, and timing of nitrogen application. Concludes that "it is important to note that the exact amount a turf area needs and the timing of its application also depends on local conditions. Nitrogen fertilization will always require a skillful and experienced turf manager to make the final decision."
