| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses "the role of calcium in the turfgrass plant, the role of calcium in the soil and the evidence supported by research about adding calcium to turf." States that calcium "plays a vital role in cell wall formation, cell division and cell growth." Describes how "calcium also plays a role in soil pH." Details possible benefits of liming turf, including "increasing availability of phosphorus from the soil, lower concentrations of aluminum and manganese...increased activity of soil micro-organisms" and the control of moss. Discusses research conducted at the University of Iowa, "to determine the advantages/disadvantages of applying supplemental calcium to turfgrass established on calcareous sand." States that "the researchers' evidence clearly demonstrated that additional calcium did not increase the growth, colour [color] or leaf calcium content of the grasses." Concludes that "liming can greatly benefit acidic soils, but may be detrimental to turf grown on calcareous sands." |
