| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the use of soil amendments in turf maintenance. States that "soil amendments can be used in a number of different ways to improve a sports field. But all soil amendments do not impart the same effect." Also states that "improper use of soil amendments can ruin both the quality of [the] field and athletic performance." Mentions considerations to take into account when deciding what soil amendment to use, including how the field will be used, what kind of soil the field has, soil texture, amount of organic matter, depth of soil top layer, how quickly water flows into the soil, and soil density. States that "there are a number of ways to [obtain this information], including laboratory analysis, consultation with a soil expert, or by using [one's] eyes, hands, and experience." Describes soil testing techniques and amendment application procedures. Suggests "[mixing the] soil amendment three or more inches deep." |
