Abstract/Contents:Discusses high temperatures across North America in 2005. States that "from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, golf courses from Myrtle Beach, [South Carolina], to Chicago [Illinois] and from Lexington, [Kentucky], to Gillette, [Wyoming], became ghost towns, with only scattered bands of golfers daring to venture into the bite of the furnace-like weather." Describes the situation at Hughes Creek Golf Club in Elburn, Illinois, stating that "the course's 2½-acre storage pond was low and the well couldn't keep up with the irrigation needs." States that "the heat wave was cause for alarm in the Canadian province of Ontario." Reports that "not all the news was bad...Greenfield Lakes Golf Course in Gilbert, Arizona...managed to boost July play...by 14 percent, despite the oppressive heat [by using golf cart air conditioning units]."
