Abstract/Contents:Discusses golf course mowing techniques, highlighting a "trend to mow greens too low, risking plant health." States that when superintendents set mowers "to mow so closely that [they] cause disease, less stress resistance, more Poa invasion, moss, algae and nematode problems." Reports that "[Dr. Frank Rossi of Cornell University] discovered that there might be some differences in how low a mower is cutting at a given bench setting between differing makes and models." States that manufacturers cannot be blamed for plant health and suggests making "more informed decisions on mower settings with whichever equipment [superintendents] prefer to use." Concludes that superintendents "cannot keep mowing the grass off [their] greens and expect any long-term accolades, especiallywhen there is a very simple alterative...raise the bench setting."
